Perhaps you are aware of the phenomenon of Fr. Stan Fortuna, the rapping priest. I admit that I had heard his name in the past, but had always assumed that he was kind of lame. I mean, I just don't go in for the hokey sort of youth speakers that seem so popular. Well, my preconceptions were shattered a couple of weeks ago. He was invited to speak at our annual diocesan high school youth rally. He was brilliant. The message was simple: Lean into Christ. Sacrifice yourselves for him. And he was funny. He spoke directly to the hearts of our teens. It takes some talent to impress a teenager. He managed to accomplish that task. I found his talk to be stirring as well. And the music wasn't too bad either . . .

Well, I think that there can be serious debate about whether or not such traditional values as the salvific meaning of human suffering, chaste love, self denial, sacrifice, frequenting the sacraments, and the value of good friends are "gimmicks."
