Eternal City’s IQ increases dramatically

No, I didn’t take a quick trip out of the city. It’s an exciting day in Rome because the Society of Jesus' (SJ) 35th General Congregation just convened. The Jesuits are gathered in the Eternal City to elect a new superior general. They kicked things off this morning with Mass in Rome’s Gesu Church, the site of the tomb of St. Ignatius, the Jesuit founder. The 225 delegates to the General Congregation will be joined by many of the 446 Jesuits who live and work or study in Rome full time.

News sources say about 20 of the delegates live in Rome, working at the Jesuit headquarters, the Jesuit-run Pontifical Gregorian University or at the Vatican. In fact, Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi is director of the Vatican Press Office, Vatican Radio and the Vatican Television Center. The Vatican Radio office just so happens to share the same block as our residence.

A few of my classmates and I paid our respects this morning to the Society’s mother church. So in honor of the Smarter then Jesus (SJ) crowd, I offer you some of my pictures of the Gesu Church. Again I have to rely on some stock pictures and some of my own because of my unsteady hands.

This is one of my favorite churches in Rome.

Saint Francis Xavier’s hand, I could have used this to steady the camera.

What is it with seminarians and the Gesu? I've never met a seminarian, who didn't love it! Thanks for the update, blogger.
